ABC's Tree of the Future Inaugurated

03 Jun 2023

A tree of the future, named after Anglo Belgian Corporation (ABC), was inaugurated today at the Claeys-Bouüaert Park playground in Mariakerke (Ghent, Belgium). ABC received this award when it was honoured with the climate prize for "innovation" on the last day of the Ghent Festivities, on July 24, 2022, presented by the Ghent Climate Forum with the support of "Trefpunt."

By awarding a Climate Prize, the Ghent Climate Forum aims to support the fight against climate change and highlight actors who contribute positively to the battle against global warming.

The prize consisted of awarding a so-called "tree of the future", which will remain in Ghent for a long time. "It serves as an ecological landmark so that future generations, including children and grandchildren, can recognize the individuals who worked in 2022 to create a liveable world in the 21st century," said John Vandaele, Chairman of the Ghent Climate Forum.

ABC Engines won the 2022 "Innovation" award for its pioneering work in developing hydrogen engines, particularly for use in shipping. More information on this can be found here.

Trees of the Future is a project of Gents MilieuFront (GMF), in close cooperation with the City of Ghent. A "tree of the future" is an isolated tree in a street or square that is given sufficient space and guarantees a long lifespan. Ensuring carefree growth for at least 100 years is of utmost importance. In urban areas, this is not common, as the average city tree typically does not live beyond 30 years. Through GMF, citizens of Ghent can submit suggestions for "tree of the future" locations, which are public properties earmarked for planting trees for future generations. The call for suggestions will be open for the third time in 2023. "This year, trees for the future were planted at 17 different locations in Ghent. Each location received at least one "tree of the future," and in some cases, like the Van Hembysebolwerk, multiple specimens were planted, all suggested by the citizens of Ghent," says Pieter Nuytinck of Gents MilieuFront.
