ABC Engines contributes to milestone energy transition project G-TECH

12 Jun 2025

Yesterday, the foundation stone was laid for G-TECH, the Ghent Thermal Energy Conversion Hub, at Tech Lane Ghent Science Park, campus Ardoyen. ABC Engines is proud to contribute to this landmark initiative, which positions Flanders at the forefront of innovation in renewable thermal energy.

G-TECH will be a state-of-the-art, open innovation and testing hub where academic institutions and industrial partners collaborate to accelerate the development and commercialisation of sustainable thermal energy technologies. The facility will support advanced research in areas such as industrial and residential heating, thermal storage, and renewable fuels.

To mark the occasion, ABC Engines presented a scale model of its future-proof and fuel-flexible Evolve 4EL23 engine. This medium-speed engine is designed with maximum fuel flexibility and lasting performance as core principles. Its ability to operate on a range of fuels means users are not locked into a single energy source, allowing the engine to adapt easily to changing regulations and market conditions. This makes the Evolve 4EL23 a safe and future-ready investment.

In addition to the scale model, ABC will provide a full-size Evolve 4EL23 engine for installation in G-TECH’s new test facility. The engine will play a vital role in supporting research into the efficient deployment of e-fuels such as hydrogen, methanol and ethanol. These fuels are essential for decarbonising heavy-duty transport and maintaining energy security during periods of low renewable electricity production.

“We believe in strong partnerships between industry and academia to shape the future of energy. G-TECH will be a vital driver of innovation, and we’re honoured to contribute to this strategic initiative,” said Tim Berckmoes, CEO of ABC Engines.

“Our Evolve engine platform provides a versatile, real-world test bed for combustion systems powered by tomorrow’s fuels,” added Koen Christianen, R&D Manager at ABC.

G-TECH is an initiative led by Ghent University in cooperation with spearhead clusters Flux50 and De Blauwe Cluster, and co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the Province of East Flanders and UGent itself. The project is supported by a strong industrial base, including leading companies such as Daikin, Atlas Copco and ABC Engines.

As a long-standing advocate of clean and reliable power solutions, ABC Engines is proud to support Ghent University and its partners in accelerating the energy transition.
