Presenting Field Experience with Dual-Fuel Hydrogen and Methanol Tugs

20 may 2025

Today at the TugTechnology Conference in Antwerp, our colleague Pieter Boeykens presented the paper “Field Experience with Dual-Fuel Hydrogen and Dual-Fuel Methanol Engines in Hydrotug 1 and Methatug.”

The paper offers insights based on extensive testing and commissioning of two dual-fuel tugboats linked to the Port of Antwerp-Bruges: the Hydrotug 1 and the Methatug.

  • Hydrotug 1 is a newly built tractor tug powered by medium-speed BeHydro 12-cylinder dual-fuel hydrogen engines. It is fitted with an inert gas system and gas detection systems to ensure safe operation.
  • Methatug, a converted vessel, is equipped with retrofitted ABC 8-cylinder dual-fuel methanol engines, along with integrated fuel storage, inert gas systems, ventilation, fire suppression, and a dedicated fuel preparation room for safe methanol handling.

The paper examines engine performance, fuel substitution ratios, emission profiles, and integration challenges. It also addresses safety measures, storage requirements, and regulatory compliance. These findings support key design considerations and provide guidance for scaling hydrogen and methanol technologies across the maritime sector.

A sincere thank you to all delegates for attending and for your strong interest in our paper.
