ABC Secures Repeat Order for Carsten Rehder’s Next-Generation Coral 7500 Vessels

03 jun 2026

ABC is pleased to announce a repeat order from Indian-based shipyard GRSE for four 8-cylinder methanol-ready DZ engines, which will serve as the main propulsion units for the new Rehder Coral 7500 Multipurpose Dry Cargo Vessel line. This follows an initial delivery of eight methanol-ready 8DZ engines booked at the start of last year and now already delivered to India. The repeat order reflects the strong and trustworthy cooperation between Hamburg-based Carsten Rehder Reederei, GRSE, and ABC, which has been a key factor in securing this new contract.

This follow-up order builds on ABC’s earlier deliveries of eight engines for the programme. Each of the 12 vessels will be equipped with one 8DZ engine, running on (bio)diesel, developing 1,768 kWm at 1,000 rpm and prepared for future dual-fuel operation with methanol, enabling Carsten Rehder to transition efficiently to alternative fuels as they become available.

The 120 m CORAL 7500 vessels, designed by SEDS, are optimised for European short-sea trade, offering maximum cargo flexibility. Their single cargo hold, with an approximate capacity of 400,000 cubic feet, can be divided using bulkheads that also serve as tween-decks. A bridge-forward layout, flush aft deck, and open-top configuration provide versatility for transporting project cargo.

The vessels’ propulsion system combines diesel-mechanical drive with a controllable pitch propeller and a shaft generator capable of power-take-off, power-take-in, and power-take-home. In addition, the four hybrid units in this follow-up order will be delivered with an integrated 1 MW battery system from newbuild, whereas the first eight vessels are designed as battery-ready. This hybrid setup ensures efficient operation across a wide speed range, while providing extra power for ice-class navigation (Ice 1A). A dedicated biofuel system, including additional tankage and bunker station, is included from delivery.

With these future-ready ABC engines, Carsten Rehder is well-positioned to navigate the ongoing energy transition, seamlessly switching to alternative fuels as they become available.

ABC thanks Carsten Rehder’s management team for their continued trust and looks forward to a strong and enduring partnership.
