Egypt’s First Locally-Built Tugs for Suez Canal Authority - Powered by ABC Engines - Launched

28 Apr. 2025

Anglo Belgian Corporation (ABC) is thrilled to announce the launch of the AZM 1 and AZM 2 tugboats at the Misr Tugboats Factory, marking the first of 10 locally-built tugboats for the Suez Canal Authority (SCA). These tugboats, designed by Robert Allan Ltd, are powered by two efficient and robust ABC 12-cylinder engines, providing a bollard pull capacity of 90 tons.

The official launch took place on April 23 at the Misr Tugboats Factory in Safaga, a joint venture between the SCA and the South Red Sea Shipyard (SRSS). The AZM 1 and AZM 2 are the first tugboats to be produced at this facility, which supports Egypt’s strategy to localise marine vessel production.

The ceremony was attended by Egyptian officials, including Adm. Ossama Rabiee, Chairman and Managing Director of the SCA, and Mr. Mostafa El-Dougishy, Chairman of the South Red Sea Shipyard. H.E. Mr. Bart De Groof, Ambassador of Belgium to Cairo, also joined the celebrations.

Adm. Rabiee spoke: “These tugboats represent a significant addition to the SCA fleet, enhancing our capabilities in maritime salvage, pilotage, and emergency response, all while meeting international environmental standards."

ABC is honoured to contribute to this landmark project, providing high-performance engines for these locally-built tugboats and reinforcing the SCA’s fleet with reliable, cutting-edge combustion engine technology.
